How to care for Crassula volkensii variegata

Crassula volkensii variegata is a vining sub shrub with soft, varied colours originating in South Africa. The succulent leaves are lined with creamy variegation and accented with a green stripe through the middle. With gentle sun stress, leaves blush with an overall pink colour and pink spots which create a gorgeous contrasting background for new growth forming in bright green.

Care Tips

LIGHT: Variegated forms are generally more sensitive to the sun and can sunburn easily. Introduce C. volkensii variegata slowly to find the right balance of light for blushing, sun stressed leaves. Start with semi shade and morning sun.

WATER: Crassula are happy with a bit more water than other succulents, like Echeveria. Water just before the soil dries out completely during seasons of growth: autumn, winter, and spring. During summer dormancy, reduce water, allowing the soil to dry between watering.

SOIL: Use a well-draining soil mix.

PLANTING: Well suited for 16 cm pots and hanging baskets where the the pendulous branches can hang. They are also suited for ground cover in gardens where it can be protected from frost.

FERTILISER: Fertilise when the plant begins looking lackluster, or slows in growth, using a diluted fertiliser.

BLOOMING: Tiny white flowers pop open at the ends of clusters and branches in early spring.

DORMANCY: Crassula volkensii variegata are dormant in summer as they thrive in more mild temperatures.

PROPAGATION: These succulents can be propagated by rooting stem cuttings.
